Starting a blog can be a great way to share your thoughts, showcase your expertise or grow your business online. But how do you actually get started? In this blog, you will learn what exactly a blog is and how to create one step by step in WordPress.
What is a blog?
A blog is an online platform where you can publish regular articles (also called “posts”). Blogs are often informative, personal, or intended to engage an audience. They can take different forms, such as written text, videos or photos.
A blog can be used for:
- Sharing knowledge and expertise
- Improving your online visibility (SEO)
Step 1: Log in to your WordPress dashboard
To create a blog post, first log into your WordPress dashboard. You do this by going to your website URL and adding /wp-admin
. For example: www.jouwwebsite.nl/wp-admin
. This is where you enter your username and password.
Step 2: Go to “Messages” and choose “New message”
In the WordPress dashboard, you’ll see a menu on the left. Click on “Posts” and then “New post.” This will open the editor where you can create your blog post.
Step 3: Give your blog a catchy title
The title of your blog post is the first thing readers see.
Step 4: Write your content
WordPress uses a block editor called Gutenberg. This allows you to easily add different elements to your blog, such as text, images and videos.
- Add text: Click on an empty block and start typing. You can add headings by changing the text block to a “Header” (for example, H2 or H3).
- Insert images: Click the plus sign (+), choose “Image” and upload an image from your computer or media library.
- Add links: Select a piece of text, click on the link icon and enter the URL.
Step 5: Optimize your blog for SEO
To ensure that your blog is found well in search engines, it is important to work on SEO. Use a plugin such as Yoast SEO and perform the following steps:
- Add a focus keyword (for example, “Create WordPress blog”).
- Write a meta description: a short summary of your blog (160 characters maximum).
- Make sure your keyword is reflected in the title, headers and text.
Step 6: Choose a category and tags
Categories and tags help organize your content and make it easier for visitors to find relevant articles. Add a new category or select an existing one, and add some targeted tags.
Step 7: Add a featured image
A featured image (also called a thumbnail) is the visual representation of your blog post. Go to the right sidebar, click on “Featured Image” and upload an attractive image that matches your content.
Step 8: Publish your blog post
Are you satisfied with your blog? Click the “Publish” button at the top right of the editor. WordPress will ask you to confirm your choice. Once published, your blog will be live and accessible to visitors!
